The domestic legal hemp industry continued its rapid expansion in 2021, and 2022 looks to be another year of growth and evolution for the space. Join Eric Steenstra, President of Vote Hemp and VP of the California Hemp Council, as he rejoins the Cannabusiness Key for an exploration of recent developments in hemp policy at the state and federal levels as well as trends in hemp farming and hemp derived cannabinoid products.

Meet the Speaker:

Eric Steenstra is a hemp industry pioneer, co-founding hemp clothing and lifestyle brand Ecolution 1992. Eric was a founding member of the Hemp Industries Association (HIA) and served as Executive Director from 2008 to 2016. Eric now serves as the president of Vote Hemp, the political advocacy organization that he co-founded in 2000, and Vice President of the California Hemp Council. He is a frequent speaker at industry conferences and trusted source to the media, including CBS, New York Times, Forbes, CNN, Rolling Stone, Reuters and the Washington Post. This will be Eric’s 4th time joining the Cannabusiness Key.

Steven Hawkins | CEO of the United States Cannabis Council & Executive Director of the Marijuana Policy Project

Steven Hawkins is President and CEO of the US Cannabis Council, a first-of-its-kind strategic alliance that combines the collective resources of leading cannabis companies and prominent advocacy organizations to speak in one voice to end federal cannabis prohibition and create an equitable and values-driven cannabis industry. Until recently, he also served as Executive Director of the Marijuana Policy Project, a leading national organizations advancing legalization of cannabis for adult use and medical treatment.

Hawkins began his career as a civil rights attorney and has served in national leadership roles at organizations advancing civil and human rights and criminal justice reform. He was previously Executive Vice President of the NAACP, Executive Director of Amnesty International USA, President of the Coalition for Public Safety and Executive Director of the National Coalition to Abolish the Death Penalty. He is a graduate of Harvard College and NYU School of Law.

Erik Ott is a co-founder of KO Acquisitions. He began his career as an Associate at the Venture Capital firm Covato/Lipsitz in Pittsburgh, PA in the late 80s. His primary role at the firm included Venture Analysis as well as post-investment business development support to existing portfolio companies. In early 1990 Erik took one of C/L’s portfolio companies into the European market and ran that business in Spain until the formation of a Joint Venture with a Spanish partner in 1992. In 1995, Erik co-founded Rainmaker Capital, a boutique investment bank specializing in Corporate Development and M&A. At Rainmaker, Erik spearheaded the M&A team completing numerous transactions in the technology market. Erik also managed the corporate development arm of Rainmaker, assisting international companies entering the US and California markets to form partnerships with large tech companies.
